FPSC SST 2018 Answer key
The Secondary School Teacher (SST) exam paper from the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) conducted in 2018. The paper consists of two parts: English (Part-I) and Professional (Part-II).
Part-I (English) focuses on grammar, vocabulary, and sentence correction. The questions test various aspects of English language proficiency, such as correct verb forms, prepositions, articles, and the appropriate use of words.
Part-II (Professional) covers topics related to education, psychology, teaching methods, curriculum, administration, and other pedagogical knowledge. This section also includes some general knowledge related to education and administrative roles.
The format of the paper is multiple-choice questions (MCQs), with each question having four options. The exam is designed to test the candidate's competency in both language and professional knowledge required for a secondary school teacher's role.
The editorial answer explanations below cover questions 1–100. They are not an authenticated FPSC answer key. Ambiguous and source-dependent items are marked. The additional practice questions that follow are a separate set.
Part-I (English)
1. (B): “Recommended” is the past-tense verb in the relative clause whose subject is “my teacher”; “are” agrees with the main subject “story books”.
2. Ambiguous: (A) “is” and (B) “was” are both grammatical. No time context is supplied.
3. (B): “Digging” is a participle in “while digging”; “found” is the finite past-tense verb.
4. (D): "None of these" is correct because "enjoyed" and "made" would be the correct verbs.
5. (A): “Looking through an old album” is a participial clause; “was amused” is the main predicate, not a past continuous verb.
6. (C): "of" is the correct preposition to use with "ignorant."
7. (B): "to" is the correct preposition.
8. (C): "with" is the correct preposition.
9. (A): "to" is the correct preposition.
10. (B): "with" is the correct preposition.
11. (C): "at, for" are the correct prepositions.
12. (A): "For" is the correct preposition.
13. (B): "truth" is the correct word.
14. (A): "Wise" is the correct adjective.
15. (B): "offence" is the correct word.
16. (A): "distress" is the correct word.
17. (B): "Chauffeur" is the correct term.
18. Ambiguous: both “blooper” (A) and “blunder” (B) can describe a foolish mistake. Blunder is the conventional choice, but not uniquely required.
Part-II (Professional)
19. (B): Max Weber is from Germany.
20. Unverified historical statistic: the question needs a fiscal year and a definition of education spending versus allocation. Do not treat 2.5% as a verified current figure.
21. (B): Empiricism is the idea that knowledge is acquired through the senses.
22. (C): Physiology is correct; it deals with the functions of living organisms.
23. (B) Amygdala is the intended answer if “eager” was a transcription error for “anger”. The original wording requires checking; the amygdala is involved in emotional processing, not solely one emotion.
24. (D) None of these is the precise choice: belief in one God is monotheism. Theism is a broader term and does not by itself specify exactly one deity.
25. (A): Simulations allow students to learn from the inside.
26. (C): Humanistic psychology emphasizes the growth potential of healthy people.
27. (A): Maslow presented the Hierarchy of Needs.
28. (C) Stimulants is the intended ADHD-treatment answer. Hyperactivity alone is not a diagnosis or a reason to medicate a student; diagnosis and treatment are clinical decisions.
29. (C): Accommodation is changing an existing schema to incorporate new information.
30. (C): Curriculum reflects the culture of society.
31. (C): Applied research is conducted to test and apply theories.
32. (B): Action research is an approach with a classroom focus.
33. (D) None of these is fully accurate as printed. A scientific hypothesis must be testable; it has not necessarily already been tested.
34. (B): Reliability concerns consistency; test–retest results should be sufficiently consistent, not necessarily numerically identical.
35. (B): Sampling is the process of selecting individuals for a study.
36. (B): A secondary school teacher is directly responsible to the headmaster.
37. (C) Head teacher is the conventional key, but school-council membership and chairing rules depend on jurisdiction. The applicable historical rule has not been authenticated.
38. (C) Trait theory is the intended historical textbook association. Modern trait approaches do not establish that leadership cannot be developed.
39. (B): Administration often means to look after.
40. Unresolved: the claim that one group is always best placed to evaluate a principal is context-dependent. Teachers’ views are one useful source, not a universal answer.
41. (A): Transactional leadership motivates subordinates by rewards and punishments.
42. Unresolved as an absolute claim: preferences depend on people and context; teachers are not uniquely or invariably the group that dislikes autocratic leadership.
43. Unverified historical rule: paternity-leave entitlement depends on jurisdiction, employment rules and date. Seven days must not be presented as a universal or current entitlement.
44. (B) Article 25-A is intended, but it specifies free and compulsory education for children aged 5–16; it does not state “up to class 10”.
45. (C): Line authority is the intended answer. Authority remains bounded by applicable rules; it is not an unlimited right to make decisions without consultation.
46. (C): Maxims of teaching refer to principles that make difficult concepts easier for students.
47. (B): Andragogy focuses on teaching adults.
48. (A): Synthesis involves combining scientific ideas to form a new concept.
49. (A): Demonstration method is where a teacher performs and explains a concept.
50. (A): Education for sustainable development seeks partnerships across society.
51. (A): To impart knowledge or skill is teaching.
52. (C): Assimilation is integrating new information into existing knowledge.
53. (C) Activity method is the intended choice; suitability depends on the learning objective and students, rather than age alone.
54. (C) Simulation provides one route to experiential learning. It is not universally better than every alternative in every setting.
55. (D): Pedagogy is the art and science of teaching.
56. (B) Knowledge is the commonly attributed completion of the Einstein quotation. The exact original interview text has not been independently authenticated in this review.
57. (A): Trial and error and imitation are mechanisms of learning.
58. (A): Evaluation answers the question of "how well."
59. (A): Measurement answers the question of "how much."
60. (C) Assessment is the intended choice among these options; terminology and the breadth of assessment versus evaluation vary by framework.
61. (B): Interviews assess adaptive behavior.
62. (B): A mastery test is designed to measure specific knowledge and skills.
63. (B): A survey test measures many skills with few items for each.
64. (B): MCQs have good objectivity of marking.
65. (C): The statement in an MCQ is called the stem.
66. (B): The stem should be meaningful.
67. Convention-dependent: (A) 25 using midrank percentile = 100 × (number below + 0.5 × number equal) / N = 100 × (0 + 0.5) / 2. A cumulative “at or below” definition gives (C) 50. The question does not specify its convention.
68. (A): A syllabus outlines the topics to be covered.
69. (A) 100 under the historical ratio-IQ formula when mental age equals chronological age. “Physical age” is imprecise; modern standardized IQ scores are not calculated this way.
70. Unresolved: environment, parents and education can all affect behaviour. The wording does not establish which is most important.
71. Ambiguous: society (A) and people (C) overlap. The curriculum should respond to learner and societal needs; a unique option is not established.
72. (B) Learners is the intended answer, but curriculum effectiveness depends on many factors, including teaching and implementation.
73. (D): No one of biology, zoology or mathematics is universally indispensable to every possible curriculum.
74. (C) Teacher is the conventional implementation answer; “most important” is a context-dependent judgment.
75. Unverified historical statistic: the female literacy comparison requires a survey year, age definition and geographical coverage.
76. (C): Naturalism is associated with "Going Back to Nature."
77. (C): Epistemology deals with knowledge and its methodology.
78. (D): All listed goals fit into the educational goals of an idealist.
79. (B): Informal education is education without a fixed period or place.
80. ICT is the intended concept. The original options contained two (D) labels; the second option, ICT, is relabelled (B) above for clarity. IT and ICT also overlap, so the stem remains imprecise.
81. (B): Frustration and anxiety produce tension.
82. (C) Stress is the intended textbook answer; tension and stress overlap, and this wording is not a precise clinical causal definition.
83. (A): Attributes are characteristics of information.
84. (C): Career involves a sequence of jobs.
85. (A): Rubrics are scoring guides used to evaluate quality.
86. (B): Human capital refers to the collective knowledge, skills, and abilities of people.
87. Ambiguous: accomplishment (B) is the conventional answer, but success (A) can also describe an achievement.
88. (A): Meritocracy means making job appointments on merit.
89. (C): Appraisal evaluates how people perform their tasks.
90. (C): A choice made between alternatives is a decision.
91. (C) Personnel management is the most direct intended answer; leadership can also improve contributions.
92. (B) Individual growth should be considered alongside organizational growth.
93. (C) Teachers and students is the likely intended option; a principal’s legal authority is not universally limited to these two groups.
94. (B) “Men” is the legacy wording for people. Educational management also covers money, technology and other resources.
95. (C) Rational is the assumption in a classical rational decision model; actual decisions may follow bounded rationality.
96. Ambiguous: compromise involves mutual concessions, while win–win aims to satisfy both parties’ interests. “Equally satisfy” does not distinguish them well enough for a unique answer.
97. (C) Matrix structure can involve reporting to more than one manager, conflicting with strict unity of command.
98. (D) None of these: controlling, coordinating and staffing are all administrative functions.
99. (C) Mentor is the intended term for an experienced employee who supports a newer colleague.
100. (A) Win–win is the constructive intended approach among the options; the appropriate response still depends on the conflict.
Additional teaching practice questions
