NET An Overview : NUST has its own entry test called NET, which is considered as the well-organized, yet an extremely competitive testing system. Here I’ve covered the most important things you need to know for applying.

Dates to Remember:

Initially, NET used be held only once a year. However, now the test is held 3 times in an academic year. The main purpose of doing so was to make sure that people who weren’t able to perform well in the first test are able to improve their performance in the next one. You can give one test or all of them - the best score will be considered. The dates you need to remember for the test are:

• First Series NET 1: December 2015 - January 2016
• Second Series NET 2: March - April 2016
• Third Series NET 3: June - July 2016

Once the registrations open for a particular test series, you can pick a date and time which suits you best. I further discuss the application process next.

How to Apply

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for appearing in the NET you should have:

• Minimum 60% aggregate in each Matriculation & FSc. and other equivalent exams.
• You can apply for NET on the basis of your FSc. Part 1 score but your admission will be subject to your FSc. Part 2 score.
• O/A Level students can appear in the NET on the basis of their O Level equivalence but their admission will be subject to their A Level equivalence.

The academic qualifications needed for the different programs vary but for Engineering programs FSc. Pre-Engineering and other equivalent exams work. Pre-Medical and equivalent exams for Medical & Applied Bio-Sciences.

Test Structure:

The paper pattern depends on which course you’re applying for. All tests however, have 200 MCS’s with an allotted time of 3 hours. Here’s a breakdown along with the weightages of the subjects.

Engineering:

• ​Mathematics ​40% ( 80 MCQs )
• ​Physics 30% ( 60 MCQs )
• ​Chemistry 15% ( 30 MCQs )
• ​English 10% ( 20 MCQs )
• ​Intelligence 5% ( 10 MCQs )

Computer Science:

• Mathematics 40% ( 80 MCQs )
• ​Physics 30% ( 60 MCQs)
• Computer Science 15% ( 30 MCQs )
• ​English 10% ( 20 MCQs )
• ​Intelligence 5% ( 10 MCQs )

Medical & Applied Bio-Sciences:

• Biology ​40% ( 80 MCQs )
• Chemistry 30% ( 60 MCQs )
• Physics 15% ( 30 MCQs )
• ​English 10% ( 20 MCQs )
• ​Intelligence 5% ( 10 MCQs )

Business & Social Sciences:

• Verbal (English) ​40% ( 80 MCQs )
• Quantitative (Mathematics) ​40% ( 80 MCQs )
• Intelligence 20% ( 40 MCQs )

There are three NET's held throughout the year in December, March and June. The computer-based exam is held in Islamabad only, and if you live in Karachi or Quetta, where the other tests are conducted, you'll have to give the paper-based NET-3 in June. Upon announcement of the results students are given merit positions that show them where they stand. NUST has a very low acceptance rate as compared and a merit position in the top 700 ensures admission in any faculty you like. Usually, the top 3500 merit positions are selected for admission, the rest are placed in waiting or rejected.
